Cleaning Your Life is Like Cleaning-Out Your Closet

Recently I was cleaning my closet-out going through things that I haven’t worn in a while and things I didn’t like anymore that didn’t fit right. I was making piles and separating clothes. I careful looked at each piece of clothing to decide what needs to be thrown out, taken to cleaners or donated to the Goodwill. It took some time to make decisions on what to do. As I was doing this, I started thinking about life and realize sometimes you need to stop and clean-out your life just like you must clean-out your closet.

We buy clothes to add to our wardrobe to look good, like we meet people and add them into our lives to make us feel good. Just like some of those clothes don’t fit right anymore and they are taking up space in your closet, there are some people who don’t fit in your life anymore and taking up space in your life.

That’s when you need to stop and make piles for people in your life. Look at the people who you surround yourself with to decide just where they stand in your life. Confucius, the Chinese philosopher said, ‘you are who you are surrounded by’ which means if you are around people who are not successful, unhappy and no motivation…guess what…that’s who you are. If you are around people who are successful, happy and going after the things they want in life…that’s who you are.

The people who bring something into your life and are there for you they should go into the pile of keeping. The people who you enjoy at just certain times are the ones who you should see at the appropriate time only for those moments, it’s like taking certain clothes to the cleaners to be cleaned. The ones that drain you, make you unhappy and always hurting you, they need to be thrown out. Just like your closet that have clothing that’s not right for you anymore and taking up space in your closet, it’s the same thing for people that’s not right for you who are taking up space in your life. It’s a hard job to clean-out your closet and it’s a hard job to let people go in your life, but once you do it the results are great. Your closet looks so much better and your life feels so much better.

So…my question is why do we hang on to clothes we can’t wear anymore and people who are not a good fit for our lives?
